·Costs of materials are 20-30% of the total cost of any painting project
·Square footage of painting area by determining the total paintable area:
oExample: A room that is 10ft by 12ft with walls of nearly 8 ft
§The floor/ceiling area in this room is: 120sq ft
§The actual wall area is (10+10+12+12 X 8): 352sq ft
§Total paintable area: (ignore windows/doors): 472Sq Ft
·Amount of preparation work required. Some surfaces require very little preparation. Others due to damage, neglect, inferior paint products, water damage, or failed previous preparation. Gloss, semi-gloss, dark colours and surfaces previously covered with oil paint often take longer to cover.
·Ease to paint. It is easier to paint some surfaces than others, for example, an apartment or floor in a house that is empty will take less time to paint. However a job that includes open beams, skylights, or stairwells will take longer.
·Repairs; for every gallon of wall paint, 20 minutes in repairs should be considered for the best quality finish.
·Clean-up; for every color, sheen and type of paint used, clean up time is increased.
·Type of materials, name brand paint can affect your price by upwards of $20.00/gallon.
·Special circumstances; in some cases, special circumstance can affect your price. For example, if you are renovating, having your painting done before carpets or flooring is completed will save costs. However, covering smoke damage would add time and costs.
·Color Schemes: Most homes are painted with two colors, with one being the body and the access color for trim areas, however, your choice may be to have three or more colors, and this will affect the quote, or cost of painting.
